Long Term Key Stage 4 Provision

Horizons Academy Bexley works with mainstream schools as a partner where students are at serious risk of exclusion. Our aim is to reduce permanent exclusions through presenting alternative options and working collaboratively with mainstream colleagues in developing personalised plans to support the learning of students for whom mainstream is no longer a viable option.

Students who access out service often have a history of persistent disruption, erratic educational attendance through repeated fixed term exclusions and may have involvement with a range of other agencies through poor decision-making in the past. We are able to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which allows all students to achieve and be fully prepared to move on successfully to work, college or further training at 16 in line with the raising of the participation age to 18.

All of our students follow a core curriculum of:

  • English (GCSE and Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2)
  • Maths (GCSE and Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2)
  • ICT (Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2 / GCSE Computer Science may be offered to some students based on ability)
  • Science (GCSE)
  • PSHE (Levels 1 and 2)

The majority of our students are able to access options in a further 2-3 courses which enables them to achieve a potential accreditation outcome of 7-8 GCSEs during their time with us. We review our options annually to ensure these match to student interests and abilities. Options may include:

  • RE / Ethics (GCSE Short or Full Course)
  • Art (GCSE)
  • Business Studies (GCSE)
  • History (GCSE)
  • Sociology (GCSE)
  • PE (GCSE)
  • Duke of Edinburgh
  • BTEC Food (Level 2)

For our most challenging students where the academic route is not sustainable, bespoke programmes are created to maximise their chances of success. This may include work experience, off-site vocational courses and individualised work through a virtual learning platform, EdLounge.

Our Key Stage 4 provision is not an easy or less valuable option, but in some cases a more bespoke and tailored programme of learning and support which provides a sound platform for future success.
