New Horizons Hub of London South East Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this cultural commitment. Our academies adhere to the three following DfE safeguarding documents:

  • Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education 2019
  • The Prevent Duty 2015

Through our in-depth training schedule and work with the external agencies within the community, we understand the wider contextual barriers and are fully committed to ensuring that consistent effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children and staff at school. This means the golden thread of safeguarding is woven into the curriculum and not limited to PSHE in addition to monitoring student attendance closely and concerns shared as appropriate with, but not limited to; parents/carers, Bexley Education Welfare Service and Childrens Social Care. This further means that we ensure everyone working in our Academies has successfully completed the necessary clearances to enable them to work with our students and are recorded appropriately on our Single Central Register.

Our central Inclusion Team has Pastoral Support Co-ordinators (PSCO) allocated to each Academy who, as Designated Safeguarding Leads, receive training updates every 2 years via the Education People. Each PSCO also specialises in particular areas including Mental Health, Anti Bullying and Trauma. As a valuable resource within each Academy, all PSCO’s are trained in all areas of contextual safeguarding and feed into a tiered approach which has the strategic intention of supporting a cohesive, consistent approach across all the academies.  This tiered approach operates with a Safeguarding Liaison Officer as the senior level practitioner and it is this role that acknowledges and responds to complex cases, multi sibling families and formal escalation, which aims to prevent impact on the home/Pastoral Support Co-ordinator relationships. We are fortunate that we have a number of designated leads who are equally trained to a consistent level across the Hub, with the Head of School as the overall lead in each Academy.

It is our expectation, as reiterated throughout our training, that if a member of staff is concerned about a student’s welfare they will record their concern, including any observations or conversation had/heard and report to one of the Designated Safeguarding Leads as soon as practically possible but always on the same day. This includes concerns of radicalisation or female genital mutilation, both of which fall under mandatory reporting.

Our safeguarding aim is to have a prompt response to all safeguarding concerns shared and make appropriate assessments related to risk and vulnerability, with the student always at the heart of our practice. There are however occasions when a disclosure or concern warrants a referral to Childrens Social Care. When this occurs we will ensure that our concerns are discussed with the student and their parents/carers, unless we have determined that by doing so may place a child further risk. In this instance, as outlined in our Safeguarding Policy and in recognition of Sharing Information 2015 (updated July 18), we may refer to police or social care without consent.

Our duty of care further extends to all students who come off our roll mid-year, through Electing Home Education or moving out of area. In both instances, appropriate referrals to local or any known new authorities are made and evidentially logged to ensure no child slips through the net.
